Job Description

PIC Design Engineer

About Quandela

Quandela is a French deep-tech company founded in 2017 that designs photonic quantum computers and makes them available to European academic and industrial research.

We are developing the entire technology chain, from the design of photonic quantum computers, to the software bricks that accompany them — in particular Perceval, our open-source simulation library, and Merlin, our algorithm execution platform — as well as the infrastructure necessary to operate these systems in real computing environments.

As part of the EuroQCS-France program (GENCI & CEA), Quandela provides the European scientific community with photonic quantum machines connected to HPC supercomputers. In 2025, our latest generation photonic quantum computer, Lucy (12 qubits), was deployed at TGCC CEA, directly coupled to the Joliot-Curie supercomputer.

The Context

Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are at the heart of Quandela's quantum computing platform. As we scale our systems to new heights, we need to optimize PIC design for manufacturability, performance, and cost-effectiveness.

The Role

As a PIC Design Engineer, you will:

  • Design and optimize photonic integrated circuits for quantum computing applications

  • Develop simulation and modeling tools for PIC characterization

  • Collaborate with semiconductor and manufacturing partners

  • Conduct design validation and performance analysis

  • Contribute to patent development and technical documentation

  • Participate in design reviews and provide technical guidance

  • Help optimize manufacturing processes for cost and performance

What We're Looking For

Education & Experience:

  • Master's or PhD in Physics, Photonics, Electrical Engineering, or related field

  • 3+ years of experience in PIC design or photonic circuit design

  • Hands-on experience with optical design software (e.g., Zemax, COMSOL, RSoft)

  • Knowledge of semiconductor manufacturing and photonic technologies

  • Understanding of quantum photonics and quantum computing

Technical Skills:

  • Expertise in PIC design methodology

  • Proficiency with CAD/CAM tools and design automation

  • Strong modeling and simulation skills

  • Familiarity with Python, MATLAB, or similar for design optimization

  • Knowledge of optical characterization methods

Soft Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication in English

  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills

  • Self-motivated and proactive in identifying improvements

  • Experience with collaborative design and agile methodologies

Why Join Quandela?

  • Work on a unique photonic quantum computing platform already deployed in Europe

  • Collaborate with world-class technical teams

  • Have direct impact on the next generation of quantum computers

  • Work in a dynamic, multidisciplinary team environment

  • Join a company with a strong scientific culture and commitment to innovation

  • Competitive salary and benefits package

Details

  • Location: Bruyères-le-Châtel (Paris region), with possibilities for hybrid work

  • Contract Type: CDI (permanent contract)

  • Salary: Highly competitive, commensurate with experience
