About Black Semiconductor
Black Semiconductor develops graphene-based photonic solutions for the semiconductor industry, combining electronic computing with photonic communication to enhance chip connectivity and energy efficiency.
The Role
Photonic Component Designer position creating broadband passive devices for I/O coupling and polarization management, plus high-speed active components.
What You Will Do
-
Design and benchmark passive and active photonic components
-
Perform fabrication-tolerant design optimization
-
Develop test structures and apply design-for-test (DFT) methods
-
Component and circuit layout work
-
Deliver PDK-ready building blocks
-
Apply design-for-functionality best practices
Requirements
-
Required: M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical, Computer, Systems, or Optical Engineering
-
Expertise in integrated photonics device physics and modeling
-
Proven skills designing fabrication-tolerant passive components (grating couplers, edge couplers, polarization devices)
-
Experience with active component design and optimization
-
Background in integrated photonics platforms (preferably SiN)
-
Proficiency with Lumerical tools (Mode, FDTD, Multiphysics)
-
Python programming and Git familiarity
-
Experience with layout tools (gdsfactory, Nazca, OptoDesigner)
-
Hands-on test structure development and DFT experience
Nice to Have
-
Optical link simulation knowledge
-
Photonic lab characterization experience
-
Design for manufacturability (DFM) understanding
-
PDK building block development experience
