Senior Optical Engineer
Job Description
Astrolight is on a mission to bridge the connectivity gap between space and Earth with advanced laser communication systems. Founded in 2019, the company aims to provide end-to-end connectivity solutions by building complete and self-contained hardware for ground and space operational domains.
Astrolight produces energy-efficient optical technologies for LEO-to-Earth links, ship-to-ship communication, and ground-based systems in secure defense and commercial applications.
We are looking for a Senior Optical Engineer to support the development and integration of precision free-space optical communication systems. You will be responsible for optical design, simulation, alignment, and performance optimization of our laser-based terminals and ground stations.
This role leads designing of core optical systems and supports hands-on lab evaluation of designs, contributing directly to Astrolight's next-generation space and defense communication products.
Responsibilities
We would like you to take ownership and be part of our optics engineering efforts aimed at enabling fast laser links between our ATLAS space terminal and HERMES optical ground station or between ships carrying our POLARIS terminals. In this position you will:
-
Design sophisticated optical systems for laser communication starting from idea level
-
Simulate beam propagation and evaluate optical performance using tools like OSLO, Zemax or equivalent
-
Propose improvements to currently used optical designs
-
Lead optical assembly, alignment, calibration, and performance testing in the lab
-
Collaborate with mechanical, software, and electronics teams to ensure seamless system integration
-
Prepare optical design documentation, numerical and experimental test reports and any other relevant documents
Requirements
-
Degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, or related field
-
3 or more years of experience in designing laser and imaging optical systems
-
Experience with optical design tools (e.g., Zemax, OSLO)
-
Solid understanding of performance evaluation principles of optical systems (aberration, coupling efficiencies) using design tools (e.g., Zemax, OSLO)
-
Solid understanding of laser beam propagation, optical tolerancing, and alignment principles
-
Familiarity with photonic components and their mechanical integration
-
Understanding of optical system behaviour in harsh environments
Nice to have:
-
Experience with free-space optical communication or LiDAR systems
-
Familiarity with fiber-based components and SWIR optics
-
Experience of work in cleanroom environment
-
Knowledge of aerospace or defense standards (ECSS, MIL-STD)
What We Offer
-
Stock options package
-
Flexible hours, partial remote work
-
Small, experienced team with fast design iterations
Salary: Starting from €5,000 gross, depending on experience and skills
Additional Information
- Experience Required: 3 or more years
