About the job

Demand for Cervus’ products and services continues to grow across the Defence sector. We are looking for a motivated, creative, and technically minded Junior UI/UX Engineer to help us scale and delight our users with our data analytics capabilities across the UK and international markets.

The UI/UX Designer & Front‑End Developer is responsible for designing and building intuitive, visually consistent, and high‑performance user interfaces for complex, data‑driven systems. This hybrid role combines creative UX design with front‑end engineering skills to deliver interfaces that support operators, analysts, and mission‑critical workflows. The designer/developer collaborates closely with product, backend, and delivery teams to ensure seamless integration between UI components and distributed architectures.

Type: Full time

Location: Hybrid, Bristol & Westbury

Salary Range: Up to £36,000 per annum, depending on experience

Who We’re Looking For

UX & Interaction Design

Translate user needs, workflows, and system requirements into clear, intuitive interface designs.

Create wireframes, prototypes, and user flows for new features and enhancements.

Conduct UX reviews, heuristic evaluations, and lightweight usability testing.

Maintain and evolve the design system to ensure consistency across products.

Work with product managers to refine requirements into user‑centred solutions.

Ensure the UI accurately and intuitively reflects system state, telemetry and mission metrics

Front‑End Development

Build responsive, performant UI components using modern frameworks (Vue preferred).

Implement real‑time visualisation elements such as charts, maps, timelines, and mission dashboards.

Integrate UI with backend services, REST APIs, and event‑driven data streams.

Ensure cross‑browser compatibility, accessibility, and mobile/tablet responsiveness.

Collaborate with backend and systems engineers to ensure accurate data representation.

Develop automated unit, integration and end to end tests.

Use browser developer tools to debug layout, performance, and network issues.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Skills:

Required Skills & Experience

Technical Skills

Proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern frameworks (React, Vue, or Angular).

Familiarity with REST APIs, WebSockets, and event‑driven architectures.

Experience building data‑rich, live-updating dashboards and interfaces.

Ability to work with design tools (Figma, Sketch).

UX Skills

Solid grounding in UX principles, interaction design, and usability heuristics.

Ability to produce wireframes, prototypes, and user flows.

Understanding of accessibility approaches or standards.

Soft Skills

Strong communication and collaboration abilities.

High attention to detail and user empathy.

Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high‑quality work independently.

Comfortable working in Agile environments
