Quantum technology in European defence spans four broad areas: quantum computing, quantum-secure communications, quantum sensing and post-quantum cryptography. The sector is still early-stage compared to drones or cybersecurity, which means most employers are research-intensive companies where PhDs and deep technical specialisms are the norm rather than the exception. Thales and Airbus both run quantum research programmes, but the majority of hiring happens at startups and university spinouts building the hardware and software that will eventually feed into defence and government systems.
